Each October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is recognized to raise awareness and provide support for those affected by breast cancer. The initiative is led by the National Breast Cancer Foundation. According to the National Cancer Institute, there will be an estimated 310,720 new cases of breast cancer in 2024. It remains the second most common cancer among women after skin cancer, with statistics showing that one in eight women will receive a diagnosis.
Breast cancer develops when malignant cells grow in breast tissue, sometimes forming a tumor detectable as a lump or mass. Early-stage breast cancer may not show physical symptoms but can be more effectively treated if detected early. The American Cancer Society emphasizes the importance of early detection through screening exams like mammograms.
Screenings are advised for women starting at age forty, though those at higher risk might need earlier and more frequent screenings. Risk factors include age, ethnicity, family history, and lifestyle choices such as weight management and alcohol use. Although men can develop breast cancer—especially with a genetic predisposition—women account for 99% of cases.
For further information on Breast Cancer Awareness Month, resources are available from the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Cancer Institute. The American Cancer Society also provides guides on symptoms and risk factors.
