January is recognized as National Thyroid Awareness Month, aiming to highlight the prevalence of thyroid disorders. According to the American Thyroid Association, approximately one in ten individuals suffer from a thyroid disorder. Moreover, at least one in eight women will encounter a thyroid condition during their lifetime. Many thyroid conditions remain undiagnosed in the United States.
The thyroid gland, located in the neck and resembling a butterfly shape, plays a crucial role by producing hormones that regulate metabolism. It impacts vital organs such as the heart, brain, liver, and kidneys. Dysfunction occurs when there is an imbalance in hormone production, potentially leading to health issues. Early diagnosis can result in effective treatment and management of these conditions.
Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are two common types of thyroid diseases. Hyperthyroidism involves excessive production of thyroxine hormone by the gland, which may lead to weight loss and irregular heartbeat due to increased metabolism. In contrast, hypothyroidism is characterized by insufficient production of thyroid-stimulating hormone, affecting heart rate and body temperature regulation.
Symptoms like depression, eye problems, fatigue, memory issues, sleep disturbances, and unexplained weight changes warrant consultation with healthcare professionals for possible thyroid-related concerns.
