March marks National Nutrition Month, an initiative by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics aimed at promoting informed food choices and healthy eating habits. State Representative Todd Hunter highlights Texas's role in supporting good nutrition through its diverse geography, which provides a variety of naturally grown foods rich in essential nutrients.
"Our farmers grow nutritious vegetables and fruits in our well-kept Texas soil," Hunter states. These include broccoli, blueberries, spinach, and more, offering vitamins and minerals necessary for proper body function.
Hunter advises caution against certain ingredients and processed foods. "The most prominent food to steer clear from is added sugar," he notes, citing its links to health issues like obesity and diabetes. He suggests alternatives such as raw honey or stevia.
He also warns about artificial trans fats found in partially hydrogenated oils. "Trans fats have been linked with raising bad cholesterol," leading to health risks like high blood pressure.
Hunter encourages taking advantage of whole foods available in Texas for better nutritional choices. For more information on nutrition, resources such as USDA Nutrition.gov and the Texas Department of Agriculture Homegrown & Healthy are recommended.
For further inquiries or legislative information, Hunter invites contact via his Capitol or District Office. "As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions," he assures.
