March marks American Red Cross Month, an initiative designed to increase awareness of the humanitarian programs and services provided by the organization. State Representative Todd Hunter highlighted the global impact of the American Red Cross and encouraged public involvement.
Founded in 1881, the American Red Cross initially focused on first aid, water safety, and public health nursing programs. Its role expanded significantly during World War I to include military medical and disaster relief efforts. This period also saw the establishment of the Coastal Bend Chapter, which now serves over 19 counties in Texas.
The American Red Cross supports five key areas:
- Disaster relief: Volunteers respond to over 60,000 disasters annually, including hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, transportation accidents, and chemical spills. They collect donations, operate shelters for displaced families, and provide medical and emotional support.
- Lifesaving blood: The organization conducts blood drives across the U.S. to meet the demand for blood donations.
- Health and safety education: The Coastal Bend Texas Chapter offers CPR and AED certification, first aid classes, lifeguard training, and swimming instruction.
- Military support: The American Red Cross assists service members and their families during emergencies from deployment day onwards.
- International relief: The organization provides humanitarian services in 192 countries with outreach efforts like disaster response and vaccinations against diseases such as measles and rubella.
Rep. Hunter urged people to volunteer time or donate blood or funds during American Red Cross Month. He invited constituents with questions about Texas state agencies or constituent services to contact his offices at any time for assistance.
"Whether it is through volunteering time, donating blood, or offering financial support," Rep. Hunter said he encourages everyone "to mark American Red Cross Month by exploring ways you can get involved with this important organization."
