The Coastal Bend Blood Center, established in 1969, plays a crucial role in coordinating blood donation efforts across South Texas, including communities such as Port Aransas, Rockport-Fulton, and Corpus Christi. The center engages over 35,000 volunteers annually to meet the daily requirement of more than 150 blood donors needed to fulfill regional demands.

Blood donation opportunities are frequently available at various locations like high schools, churches, and hospitals through mobile centers. Individuals interested in donating can also visit the main facility located at 209 North Padre Island Drive in Corpus Christi during business hours. Serving ten counties with a population exceeding half a million residents, the Blood Center operates its bloodmobiles seven days a week to address hospital and patient needs throughout this expansive area.

Currently, there is an urgent call for donations of type B- and O- blood. Type O- is especially vital as it can be transfused to patients of any blood type and is critical during emergencies or for newborns requiring immediate transfusion. Donors must meet specific criteria: being at least 17 years old, weighing no less than 110 pounds, having a pulse rate between 50-100 beats per minute, not having donated whole blood in the last eight weeks, maintaining normal vital signs without infections or pregnancy.

State Representative Todd Hunter emphasized the importance of supporting organizations like the Coastal Bend Blood Center. "About 1 in 7 people need blood when entering a hospital," he noted. Hunter encourages public participation in raising awareness and engaging in donation activities.

For further details on how to assist through donations or learn more about the center's operations, individuals are directed to visit their website. Questions related to this matter can be addressed by contacting Representative Hunter's Capitol or District Office via phone or email.

Hunter represents Aransas County and part of Nueces County and can be reached at todd.hunter@house.texas.gov or by calling 512-463-0672.
