Jefferson County schools enrolled 29,484 students who identified as economically disadvantaged in the state during the 2021-22 school year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Of the 41,983 students enrolled in Jefferson County schools, 70.2% were considered economically disadvantaged. This is a 1.2% increase over the previous school year.

Jefferson County enrolled the 20th highest number of students identified as economically disadvantaged among Texas counties.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they're offering better education for more Texas students.
