U.S. Representative Randy Weber from Texas has introduced a bill titled the Protecting America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve from China Act. The proposed legislation seeks to prohibit the sale and export of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to China or any entities under its ownership, control, or influence.

"The federal government should NEVER sell a single drop of our Strategic Petroleum Reserve to Communist China—our greatest geopolitical threat. Period. It is outrageous—and downright dangerous—that anyone in the White House would approve such a move, putting our national security at risk and sticking hardworking American taxpayers with the bill to refill it," stated Rep. Weber. He emphasized the importance of the SPR to his constituents, noting that over 60% of the reserve is stored in Southeast Texas. Rep. Weber stressed the urgency of passing this bill to prevent any future president from selling the reserves to China, specifically alluding to President Biden.

The proposed legislation has garnered support from several other U.S. Representatives, including Troy Balderson of Ohio, Andy Ogles of Tennessee, Ryan Zinke of Montana, Ben Cline of Virginia, Scott Franklin of Florida, Daniel Webster of Florida, Claudia Tenney of New York, Brian Babin of Texas, Celeste Maloy of Utah, Jefferson Shreve of Indiana, Dave Taylor of Ohio, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Stephanie Bice of Oklahoma, and Chris Smith of New Jersey.
