Enrollment at Port Arthur ISD schools increased by 1.9% compared to previous school year

There were 8,152 students enrolled in Port Arthur ISD schools in the 2022-23 school year, 1.9% more than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 51.9% of them were boys, and 48.1% were girls.

Data also shows that the majority of students were Hispanic, representing 50.9% of the Port Arthur ISD total enrollment.

Port Arthur ISD roughly covers schools within Jefferson County with its main office in Port Arthur.

Among the 13 schools in Port Arthur ISD, Memorial High School recorded the highest enrollment of 2,116 students in the 2022-23 school year.

Education in Texas is often a hot button issue, especially as test scores lag behind other states.

"The problems commonly cited are flaws in the school financing system, relatively low teacher salary, poor test performance by students... dropouts from traditional schools in favor of charter schools... gun violence, and mental health issues," claimed the Texas Almanac.
