February is recognized as National Cancer Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about cancer prevention. The American Association for Cancer Research reports that 2 million Americans are diagnosed with cancer annually. The American Cancer Society anticipates over 618,000 cancer-related deaths in the United States in 2025, equating to more than 1,700 deaths each day.
National Cancer Prevention Month seeks to educate the public on lifestyle changes that can reduce cancer risk. "Cancer is a disease in which some of the body’s cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body," explains State Representative Todd Hunter from District 32. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing symptoms like fatigue, trouble breathing, or persistent lumps and advises consulting a doctor for early diagnosis and treatment.
Research indicates that over 40 percent of cancer cases and half of all cancer deaths are linked to preventable factors such as smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, and excessive sun exposure. Recommended preventive measures include quitting smoking, protecting skin from the sun, maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise, limiting alcohol intake, understanding family health history, and undergoing regular screenings.
To learn more about cancer symptoms and diagnosis, individuals are encouraged to visit the National Cancer Institute's website.
