The month of January is designated as Human Trafficking Awareness Month. During this period, advocates, organizations, and individuals come together to raise awareness about human trafficking. The Department of Homeland Security defines human trafficking as "modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act." It is distinct from human smuggling, which pertains to illegal transportation across borders. Victims span all demographics, though those in vulnerable situations, such as homelessness, are more susceptible.

Human trafficking is not only an international issue but also prevalent within the United States. It stands as the second-largest criminal industry in the country, generating billions annually. In 2023 alone, over 9,619 cases were reported nationwide through the National Human Trafficking Hotline, with approximately 2,373 cases emerging from Texas.

Efforts to combat human trafficking emphasize expanding knowledge and understanding how to recognize it. Resources like the Polaris Project and Blue Campaign offer valuable information on prevention.

The Texas Legislature remains committed to introducing legislation aimed at combating this crime. Upcoming sessions will review current laws to ensure effective prosecution and deterrence of such activities.

State Representative Todd Hunter encourages individuals with questions about these issues or any state agency concerns to contact his office for assistance. He represents Aransas County and part of Nueces County and can be reached via email at todd.hunter@house.texas.gov or by phone at 512-463-0672.
