The month of November is dedicated to recognizing the sacrifices made by men and women who served in the armed forces. U.S. veterans have contributed significantly to the nation, and it is crucial to honor their service. In Texas, several programs are in place to support current and former military members. These initiatives are managed by various state agencies, primarily the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) and the Veterans Land Board (VLB).
According to the Texas Veterans Commission, approximately 1.4 million veterans reside in Texas. Many choose to stay or relocate to Texas due to beneficial programs available for service members.
The Texas Veterans Commission was established in 1927 as the State Service Office, initially assisting veterans from wars such as the Native American wars, Spanish-American War, and World War I. The agency acts as an advocate for veterans in Texas today, helping them secure benefits earned through their service.
The TVC offers assistance through four main program areas:
- Claims: This department aids veterans, dependents, and survivors with disability benefits and rights. It represents the state and its veterans before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
- Employment: This department provides employment services for Texas veterans and helps employers find qualified veteran job applicants.
- Education: This department approves programs for federal educational benefits ensuring compliance with federal guidelines.
- Grants & Funding: The Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grant program awards reimbursement grants to organizations providing direct services to Texas veterans and their families.
Additionally, the Veterans Land Board (VLB), created in 1946, administers benefits exclusively for Texas veterans. Programs include low-interest loans on land, homes, home improvements, and long-term care services.
State Representative Todd Hunter encourages individuals with questions about these programs or any state agency issues to contact his office at any time.
