Every October, National Fire Prevention Month aims to raise awareness about home fire prevention. The National Fire Prevention Association highlights that a fire department in the United States responds to a fire every 23 seconds, with unattended cooking being the leading cause of home fires. This month emphasizes education and preparedness to prevent house fires.

The National Fire Prevention Association notes that only 43% of homeowners have an escape plan. The American Red Cross offers several tips for creating an effective safety plan: find two ways to exit each room if the primary route is blocked by fire or smoke; choose a safe meeting place at a distance from your home; practice getting low and moving to exits in case of smoke; ensure children recognize the sound of a fire alarm and know what actions to take when it goes off; make sure windows are not stuck, screens can be removed quickly, and security bars can be opened properly.

Checking smoke alarms monthly is also crucial. According to the National Fire Prevention Association, three out of five house fire deaths occur in homes with non-functional smoke alarms. Often, these failures result from missing, disconnected, or depleted batteries. Smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years based on the manufacturer's date listed on their back.

For more information, visit The National Fire Protection Association or The American Red Cross for details on fire escape plans. First Alert provides additional house fire prevention tips.

State Representative Todd Hunter encourages residents with questions regarding this information or Texas state agency issues to contact his Capitol or District Office at any time for assistance.
