September is recognized as Suicide Prevention Month. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, suicide is the second leading cause of death among people between the ages of 10-34. Additionally, suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the United States. The organization also reports that 46 percent of all people who lose their lives through suicide have been diagnosed with a mental illness.
The purpose of Suicide Prevention Month is to promote awareness and spread knowledge about resources available for those who struggle with mental illness. This month encourages open discussions about suicide, which can be a challenging topic.
Historically, there has been stigma surrounding suicide. However, discussing it openly can reduce this stigma and encourage individuals who are struggling to seek help. According to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline, people experiencing suicidal thoughts often feel relief when asked about their mental health. Moreover, such conversations can reduce suicidal thoughts.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness states that suicide rates have increased by 35 percent since 1999. Recognizing the signs of struggling mental health is crucial as suicide is preventable. Warning signs include increased use of drugs or alcohol, extreme mood swings, talking about being a burden to others, and withdrawing or isolating themselves. While these signs cannot predict whether a person will attempt suicide, knowing them and reaching out can positively impact someone's life.
