As the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season begins, State Representative Todd Hunter reminds Texans of the critical importance of preparedness. The season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, is predicted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to have above-average activity due to multiple climate factors. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center forecasts an 85% chance of an above-normal season with expectations of 17 to 25 named storms, including 8 to 13 hurricanes and potentially 4 to 7 major hurricanes.

"Tropical cyclones are more likely to form during hurricane season," Rep. Hunter noted. These cyclones, which are rotating organized systems of clouds and thunderstorms originating over tropical or subtropical waters, can escalate into hurricanes with wind speeds exceeding 74 mph. Major hurricanes reach sustained wind speeds of at least 111 mph.

Hunter emphasized the necessity for residents to understand their home’s vulnerability to storm surge, flooding, and wind damage. He urged reviewing insurance policies for adequate coverage and preparing emergency kits along with family evacuation plans.

The Texas Department of State Health Services recommends that coastal residents include essential items in their evacuation kits such as first-aid supplies, prescription medications, important documents, credit cards and cash, battery-operated radios with extra batteries, non-perishable food supplies for three days per person, water supply (one gallon per person per day), manual can openers, tools like fire extinguishers and duct tape, blankets or sleeping bags for each person, personal hygiene products, and pet supplies.

Rep. Hunter advised that in case a hurricane approaches: "Find the best evacuation route." Preparations should include trimming damaged trees and limbs from yards; securing windows with proper materials; bringing loose outdoor items inside; securing all doors including garage doors; and moving cars into garages or other secure locations.

For ongoing updates throughout the hurricane season, residents are encouraged to visit The National Hurricane Center's website. Additional information on hurricane preparedness can be found through resources provided by the American Red Cross.

Residents with questions about this information or other concerns related to Texas state agencies can contact Rep. Hunter’s Capitol Office at 512-463-0672 or his District Office at 361-949-4603.

State Representative Todd Hunter represents Aransas County and part of Nueces County. He can be reached via email at todd.hunter@house.texas.gov or by phone at his offices listed above.
