Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representatives Randy Weber and Yadira Caraveo have introduced a vital piece of energy legislation aimed at advancing next-generation pipelines. The Next Generation Pipelines Research and Development Act seeks to strengthen public-private partnerships and enhance federal research, development, and demonstration related to the evolution of key pipeline systems across the country.
In an effort to address the aging infrastructure in the United States, the bill aims to ensure that pipelines are modern, secure, and cost-effective in order to meet the nation's growing energy needs. The success of these systems and new infrastructure technologies will be crucial to the country's international competitiveness, national security, and energy independence.
Rep. Weber emphasized the importance of investing in research and development to improve and upgrade the pipeline infrastructure. He stated, "Pipelines are the safest and most efficient ways to move the fuels that heat our homes, fuel our vehicles, and unleash our economy. The United States has over 2.6 million miles of pipelines." He further added, "The Next Generation Pipeline Research and Development will be instrumental as we continue innovating and expanding our energy sources."
Highlighting the significance of pipelines for the seamless flow of resources in communities, Rep. Caraveo emphasized the need for new technologies to improve the next generation of pipelines and ensure performance, efficiency, and safety. She expressed her gratitude for the partnership with Rep. Weber and their joint effort in advancing this important bill.
The Next Generation Pipelines Research and Development Act includes several key provisions. It authorizes the Secretary of Energy, in coordination with other key departments, to establish a demonstration initiative and joint research and development program. This initiative will focus on low-to-mid-technology readiness level research projects to achieve deployment.
Furthermore, the bill creates a National Pipeline Modernization Center at the Department of Energy. This center will foster collaboration with industry stakeholders to commercialize cost-effective products and procedures. Additionally, the legislation mandates a program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for measurement research, development, demonstration, and standardization. The aim is to ensure the integrity, safety, security, efficiency, sustainability, and resilience of pipeline facilities.
The introduction of the Next Generation Pipelines Research and Development Act marks an important step towards ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the nation's pipeline infrastructure. As the United States continues to innovate and expand its energy sources, this legislation will play a vital role in modernizing pipelines and meeting the growing energy demands of the country.
