U.S. Rep. Randy Weber (TX-14) has introduced legislation to reinstate the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) at the Southern border. This legislation aims to require individuals seeking asylum or entering the country without proper documentation to return to Mexico while they await their immigration proceedings. The bill also establishes a stringent standard for asylum eligibility, ensuring that it is reserved for those with genuine humanitarian needs and preventing its misuse for ulterior motives.
In a statement, Rep. Weber emphasized the importance of reserving the asylum process for those who truly need it and criticized the Biden Administration for neglecting its duty to secure the nation's border. He said, "The asylum process should be reserved for those who genuinely need it and not be used as a hamfisted workaround that allows the Biden Administration to sidestep our nation's sovereignty." He also highlighted the alarming increase in the population of illegal aliens in the country since President Biden took office, stating, "We have almost doubled the illegal population in less than three years."
The MPP, also known as the "Remain in Mexico" policy, was initially implemented by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in January 2019. It put an end to the failed policies of catch and release and restored an orderly processing system for illegal immigrants. Under the MPP, migrants arriving at the border were given a Notice to Appear for an immigration court hearing and were then returned to Mexico to await their hearing. Mexico also agreed to provide humanitarian aid to these migrants under the U.S.-Mexico Joint Declaration and Supplementary Agreement.
However, President Biden suspended the MPP on January 21, 2021, thereby disregarding the treaty obligations with Mexico. This policy reversal quickly led to the current border crisis, with a significant increase in illegal border crossings.
Rep. Weber's legislation aims to address this crisis by reinstating the MPP and ensuring that individuals must wait in Mexico while their immigration proceedings take place. This measure is seen as a necessary and commonsense approach to mitigate and decrease illegal border crossings, allowing the Border Patrol to effectively patrol and secure the border.
The bill introduced by Rep. Weber seeks to restore order and uphold the nation's sovereignty by reestablishing the Migrant Protection Protocols. It aims to ensure that the asylum process is reserved for those with genuine humanitarian needs and to prevent the misuse of the system. By requiring individuals to wait in Mexico during their immigration proceedings, the legislation aims to mitigate the increasing number of illegal border crossings.
As the debate on immigration policies continues, Rep. Weber's bill represents an effort to address the current border crisis and restore order to the immigration system. It remains to be seen how this legislation will progress and what impact it will have on the immigration landscape.
