Texas General Land Office approves $4 million for home buyouts in Orange County floodplains

The Texas General Land Office has approved $4 million to buy 17 homes in Orange County that were damaged by Hurricane Harvey.

According to a news releasethe homes are either in floodplains or areas that flood repeatedly. The areas were “overwhelmed” by heavy rainfall from the hurricane, the news release said.

"Hurricane Harvey devastated communities across the Texas Coast," Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush said. "These recovery funds are critical to improving local infrastructure that will protect lives, homes and businesses from future storms. We continue to work with our partners in communities across the region to leverage these resources efficiently and effectively to benefit Texans affected by Hurricane Harvey."

Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Bush and the Texas General Land Office to head Hurricane Harvey housing recovery efforts, which includes over $5.67 billion in Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Those efforts are funded by $5.6 billion in federal grants. The land office has allocated $413 million to infrastructure projects in area affected by the hurricane.
