There were 10 American Indian students enrolled in Port Neches-Groves ISD schools in the 2021-22 school year, 25% more than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Port Neches-Groves ISD schools welcomed 5,196 students during the 2021-22 school year. Among them, American Indian students comprised 0.2% of the student body to be one of the least represented ethnicities in the district.

Port Neches-Groves ISD roughly covers schools within Jefferson County and has a main office in Port Neches.

Among the 12 schools in Port Neches-Groves ISD schools, Van Buren Elementary School recorded the highest enrollment of American Indian students in the 2021-22 school year, with a total of four students.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
