In a battle of Cardinals held at the LU Soccer Complex, Lamar University's women's soccer team edged out the University of the Incarnate Word 2-0 in front of their home fans on homecoming week. This is the fifth shutout LU has posted in the last six games and they still remain unbeaten at 8-0-1 overall and 5-0 in the Southland Conference.
Tonight's goal scorers came from Arely Alaniz and Christine Kitaru. For Alaniz, this is her first of the season while Kitaru retakes the team lead in goals with seven. Cariel Ellis recorded the assist on the second goal. Nicole Panis kept UIW off the scoresheet with five saves on the night as LU outshot the opposition 12-7.
At the start of the first half, both teams were only able to have one shot each in the first 19 minutes. That changed when LU was able to outshoot UIW 8-1 for the rest of the half, including a three-shot sequence in the 21st minute. All the shots were unable to get past into the net, but in the 30th minute, Alaniz provided a spark as she connected on a free kick to put LU up 1-0.
Two minutes into the second half, the tandem of Ellis and Kitaru connected as with Ellis feeding her the ball, Kitaru used her right foot to deflect the ball over the keeper and into the net for a 2-0 lead. While UIW would outshoot LU 5-3 in the half, LU refused to budge as they prevented any chances to allow a goal. By the end of the night, the Cardinals continued to add to their already historic start and complete their tenth straight victory at home.
