A series of cost-cutting measures made by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy this year that have received greater scrutiny and become the center of conspiracy theories as the November election approaches have been rolled back.

DeJoy said that he decided to rescind measures, which he instituted in response to demands from the federal government to stem the hemorrhaging of funds from the Post Office, in order to prevent, "even the appearance of any impact on election mail," according to reporting by NPR. The measures have not gone away permanently, but rather have been suspended until the election is concluded.

Jeff Steele, the Refugio County Republican Party chair, and Myra Schulze, the Goliad County Republican Party chair, responded to the Southeast Texas Times about the decision.

Steele said that he feels DeJoy is only trying to do his job, and that Democrats are going after his efforts to make the U.S. Post Office more cost-efficient as part of a deeper, election-related conspiracy because they need someone to blame.

"Democrats are making noise because it's an election year and they can blame it on the president," Steele said.

Schulze told the Southeast Texas Times that she felt it was questionable whether the postal service would be able to handle the influx of election mail with the pressure on states to move fully to mail-in voting, regardless the roll-back on changes DeJoy implemented.

Steele also said that the U.S. Post Office needs to be made more efficient and self-sustaining.

"USPS needs to be revamped," he said. "If it is supposed to be self funded then it needs to be run like a business that does what it needs to do to remain a viable business. Like reduce hours, no overtime, cut benefits and retirement packages, increase rates etc."
