State Representative Todd Ames Hunter announced on March 23 that March is recognized as National Nutrition Month, an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In a statement, Hunter discussed the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating habits, emphasizing Texas’s efforts to promote good nutrition among its citizens.
The focus on nutrition is significant because it encourages residents to be mindful of their health through dietary decisions. According to Hunter, “Texas has helped promote good nutrition for our citizens.” He noted that the state’s diverse geography allows for a variety of naturally grown foods such as vegetables, fruits, and tree nuts that are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Hunter cautioned against certain processed foods and ingredients like added sugars and artificial sweeteners. He said these can have harmful effects on organs and are linked to health problems including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type two diabetes. Alternatives such as raw honey or stevia were suggested for use in baking or beverages. Additionally, he warned about artificial trans fats found in partially hydrogenated oils due to their connection with high blood pressure, poor circulation, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and obesity.
Residents seeking more information were encouraged by Hunter to visit resources provided by the Texas Department of Agriculture as well as materials from National Nutrition Month and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. He also invited constituents with questions about state agencies or constituent services to contact his offices at any time.
Hunter represents District 32 covering parts of Nueces County according to the official website. He engages with community residents by offering constituent services according to the official website from offices located at Room E1.412 in Austin and 6060 South Staples Street in Corpus Christi according to the official website.
