October is recognized as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing public understanding of domestic violence and supporting survivors. According to the National Research Center on Domestic Violence, three in ten women and one in ten men experience domestic violence. It is estimated that 20 million people are abused by their partner each year, highlighting the widespread nature of this issue.

The Domestic Violence Awareness Project defines domestic violence as “a pattern of abusive behaviors–including physical, sexual, and psychological attacks as well as economic coercion–used by one intimate partner against another (adult or adolescent) to gain, maintain, or regain power and control in the relationship.” Abusers may use various methods such as intimidation, humiliation, injury, or even lethal force. The impact of domestic violence can be long-lasting and affect victims emotionally, psychologically, mentally, and physically.

Domestic violence affects individuals regardless of gender, race, or age. Recognizing warning signs is important for prevention. These signs can include one partner telling the other they never do anything right, displaying jealousy when their partner spends time with friends instead of them, insulting or shaming their partner publicly, and blaming their partner for violent behavior. Those who suspect someone may be experiencing abuse are encouraged to reach out and provide information about available help.

Resources for those affected by domestic violence include national organizations such as the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and local support services like The Purple Door in Coastal Bend. Additional information is available through the National Domestic Violence Hotline, which operates 24/7 at 1-800-787-3244.

State Representative Todd Hunter emphasized his office’s availability for questions regarding state agencies or constituent services: “If you have questions regarding any of the information mentioned in this week’s article, please do not hesitate to call my Capitol or District Office.
