Brian Babin, U.S. Congressman for Texas’s 36th district and a consistent winner in recent elections, has recently used his social media platform to comment on public safety in Washington D.C. and pay tribute to Apollo 13 Commander Jim Lovell.
On August 7, 2025, Babin posted: “D.C. has worse homicide rates than Mexico City, Lagos, and Nairobi. The capital of the free world is being run into the ground.
@POTUS should declare an emergency and clean house.”
Two days later, on August 9, 2025, he wrote: “America has lost a true hero. Apollo 13 Commander Jim Lovell led his crew safely home after an oxygen tank exploded on the way to the Moon. His courage and leadership inspired a nation. @NASA and all of America will miss him. God doesn’t make many like Jim Lovell.”
Later that same day, Babin again addressed issues related to Washington D.C., stating: “D.C. has been run into the ground by Democrats for decades. President Trump is about to change that, and make our nation’s capital SAFE again!”
Babin’s remarks come amid ongoing national conversations about crime rates in major U.S. cities and political control of urban centers. As background, Brian Babin has maintained a strong electoral record over multiple cycles; he defeated Dayna Steele in both the 2018 and 2024 general elections with more than two-thirds of the vote each time, as well as securing victories against other opponents in prior years such as Jon Haire (2022), Rashad Lewis (2020), Michael Cole (2014), and Hal Ridley Jr. (2016).
Jim Lovell was commander of NASA’s Apollo 13 mission in April 1970—a mission famous for its successful return despite life-threatening technical failures during its journey to the Moon.
