State Representative Todd Ames Hunter announced on April 27 that April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month, a time set aside to thank individuals who dedicate their time to serving others. This month also includes National Volunteer Week, which was created to encourage people to support their communities through volunteer work.
The observance aims to highlight the importance of volunteers in helping communities function and thrive. Hunter said, “As we join to say thank you to our community volunteers this month, I would like to also encourage us all to find ways we can help one another, especially in our Coastal communities.”
National Volunteer Week was established by President Nixon in 1974 with an executive order and has been recognized by every U.S. president since then. The week now serves as a nationwide call for people across the country to participate in volunteer activities each April.
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 11 million people volunteered on an average day in 2022. Hunter said that these individuals play an essential role in helping local organizations achieve their goals and provide services for those in need.
Research indicates that volunteering can offer individual benefits such as learning new skills or gaining career experience. AmeriCorps reports that volunteers are 27% more likely than non-volunteers to find employment after being out of work. Volunteering is also associated with health benefits like lower mortality rates and improved mental health among older adults.
