State Representative Todd Ames Hunter announced on April 7 that April is recognized as National Autism Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of public awareness about autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

The recognition of Autism Awareness Month aims to draw attention to issues affecting individuals and families living with ASD. Hunter said, “Awareness months are helpful because they bring public attention to issues facing many of our friends and families and autism is no different.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ASD is a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. The National Institute of Mental Health describes ASD as involving ongoing social problems, repetitive behaviors or limited interests, symptoms recognized in early childhood, and impacts on an individual’s ability to function socially or at work.

Hunter emphasized that people diagnosed with ASD differ widely in their learning and problem-solving abilities. He said autism is considered a spectrum disorder due to the variation in type and severity of symptoms experienced by different individuals. While there is no single known cause for ASD, research points toward abnormalities in brain structure or function as contributing factors.

Organizations such as the Autism Society—founded in 1965 by Bernard Rimland—and Autism Speaks provide resources for those affected by ASD. These groups offer referral services, education programs, and support networks across all states.

Hunter represents District 32 covering parts of Nueces County according to the official website. He has engaged with community residents through constituent services according to the official website, maintained offices both in Austin and Corpus Christi according to the official website, focused on sponsoring legislation along with committee work on state issues according to the official website, chaired the House Committee on State Affairs while serving on other committees according to the official website, and influenced state affairs through legislative activities according to the official website.

Hunter concluded his message by inviting constituents with questions about autism or any Texas state agency matters to contact his office directly.
