State Representative Todd Hunter of District 32 has announced that April is designated as Beach Safety & Rip Current Awareness Month. In a recent statement, Rep. Hunter emphasized the importance of educating the public about beach safety and the potential dangers of rip currents.

According to the United States Lifesaving Association, rip currents are powerful currents of water that can pull swimmers away from the shore at varying speeds. Rep. Hunter highlighted the significance of being aware of rip currents and provided tips on how to identify them and react if caught in one, including swimming parallel to the shore and not fighting the current.

Rep. Hunter also stressed the importance of paying attention to the Flag Warning System at beaches, which provides crucial information about water conditions. Different colored flags indicate varying levels of hazard, with red flags signaling extremely dangerous conditions that warrant avoiding the water.

In memory of Je’Sani Smith, a student who tragically drowned in a rip current in 2019, Rep. Hunter introduced House Bill 3807, also known as the Je’Sani Smith Act. This legislation mandates the placement of signs and lifeguards near structures extending into the Gulf of Mexico on public beaches to enhance safety measures.

To further promote beach safety awareness, Je’Sani’s parents established the Je’Sani Smith Foundation, which offers education and training on coastal hazards. Rep. Hunter encouraged the public to visit the foundation's website to learn more about beach safety and rip currents.

For additional information on rip currents and the Beach Flag Warning System, Rep. Hunter directed individuals to the National Weather Services and the Corpus Christi Beach Flag Warning System.
