Jefferson County County: Black students were most represented ethnicity in 2021-22 school year

Of the many ethnicities represented in Jefferson County County schools, the most prevalent ethnic group among students enrolled in Jefferson County County schools in 2021-22 school year were Black, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Of the 41,982 students attending Jefferson County County schools, 37.3% were Black. Hispanic students were the second largest ethnicity, making up 34.7% of Jefferson County County students.

In the previous school year, Black students still were the most common group in Jefferson County County, representing 37.7% of the student body.

Regina Howell Elementary School had the most even distribution of races among the county schools, including 38.4% Black students, 24.3% white students, 21.4% Hispanic students, 10.3% Asian students, 5% Multi-racial students, 0.4% American Indian students, and 0.1% Pacific Islander students.

In the 2021-22 school year, the total number of students enrolled in public schools in the county increased 0.06% when compared to the previous year.

Education in Texas is often a hot button issue, especially as test scores lag behind other states.

“The problems commonly cited are flaws in the school financing system, relatively low teacher salary, poor test performance by students…dropouts from traditional schools in favor of charter schools…gun violence, and mental health issues,” claimed the Texas Almanac.
